We see every kind of financial trouble that you can imagine. There are people that are not making a profit (and have not for a while). There are companies whose labor costs are so high that they are drowning in payroll. We see companies that cannot grow because they cannot buy enough raw materials (or, in some cases, finished goods) to produce a sufficient amount of revenue. We see once profitable companies that are shriveling up to nothing because their competition has just beaten them into the ground. Would money help these companies? The answer is EVENTUALLY. Pouring cash into a failing enterprise is like pouring a glass of water onto a dead tomato plant. If the plant is dead, (or substantially dying), and then you pour a glass of water or two you will not make much difference.

You know, it is a funny thing about tomato plants. They’re a lot like business in some ways. What looks like a dead tomato plant may not be completely dead. In many cases, you can clear away the dead leaves, kill and remove the weeds that are choking it, prune it to a proper size and add some good plant food and the darned thing will come right back. So it is with business. All of the good gardening needs to be done first. Drags on the revenues need to be cleaned out. Deadwood needs to be removed from the picture. The company needs to be conditioned to be able to function and then to grow. When all of that is done, then you add the go juice, with tomatoes, its fertilizer, with companies, its money.

When the company is in proper order, it is bankable. By that I mean that a bank will finance it. That is, by far the cheapest money available (and it doesn’t cost you any equity, either). That doesn’t mean that other funding sources are not available too or that they should not be used. However, it is important to remember that when the business is healthy, they need you as much (or more!) than you need them.
